I don't understand what value can be derived from making Henry look the way he does, as opposed to making him a badass awakened antagonist with deep emotional tramua he shares with Travis. They reintroduced an established character, revoked his accent (I understand the VA was changed but come on), redid his personality, and made him out to be a total edgy loony instead of anything worth appreciating. Not only is this dropped for some unmentioned reason, but the Henry of 1&2 was a pretty well loved character. In TSA, it was fine as there were aspects that made it appear that Henry was possessed, namely that he talked about himself in the third person. His whole character is thrown out for a joke.

Then he references how he saw Thor and that opened his third eye, so now he has awakened powers and pseudo-immortality. There's a Kylo Ren reference in his intro cutscene and it feels so damn out of place. Everything, from Travis' interjections to the cutscene after with Sylvia joking about her now dead ex-husband, undercuts anything meaningful here. Why was the most serious part of the game played for laughs front to back. Henry is a complete fucking mess and I hate everything about what they did to him. Destroyman is a complete shell of his former self with none of the emotional depth or that snot-nosed attitude he had prior. Midori has like half of her arc missing due to missing content, which makes much of her interaction feel rushed despite having way more screentime than any other boss. This could have been a story highlight but it just ends up as "she kills herself after losing" with not enough elaboration to give this any meaning. Velvet Chair Girl honestly feels like we're missing something to make the scene more emotional.

This scene really should have had Kimmy join the "gang" similar to other characters, and I feel like characterizing Kimmy as even more bloodthirsty years later is a disservice to the character. Travis' absolute ruthlessness to the fight, only to show regret a second later (seriously, the scene was way too brutal for the tone that was trying to be hit here) really feels like a pointless character development moment when we basically had this in 2. Kimmy Love dying is not only similar to the above point but in direct contrast to the game's overall theme of bonds.

This scene honestly feels like a fanfiction by someone who knows nothing about the character. Despite showing incredible emotional maturity and restraint throughout the series, he talks about himself as if he's never spared anyone in his life before. Native Dancer, I'm gonna touch more on this later, and Travis being confused as to why he can't kill him starts mucb of my issues with 3 Travis. Rank 8 and 7 get kill stolen despite having an incredibly intriguing setup/ backstory.

NMH3 goes full absurd without having much of the substance from the previous titles, many times at the expense of prior characters. TSA in particular is a fucking trip and it's got absolutely insane writing, I've struggled with depression at various points in my life and that game really hits harder than almost anything else.

Being "strange" has always done this series good, but at the end of the day the series stays strange whilst still being emotional and raw. 1, 2, and TSA managed to have plot points like a grandma with a shopping cart cannon, Bad Girl's clones, Dark Star, the mech fight, Mimmy, a paranormal soviet cosmonaut, deathballs, bad dog, and a trip to Mars yet these points don't squander the themes and story of these titles. I've always been pro-absurdist with this series, but the game takes it to a level that removes almost all grit and maturity from the piece. I feel like more effort was put into cramming as many references per frame in than actually considering "will this contribute to the story?". NMH3 just comes across to me as that guy at a party who wants to be funny every second, to the point where every moment is undercut by some attempt at humor. Aside from very choice scenes, everything felt deliberate and the humor was well paced even if the gameplay wasn't at times. I mean really, the game does things at times that make downright no sense considering the characters or the themes of the game especially in comparison to prior entries.Įven 2, a game lambasted to death from virtually every Suda head for being all over the place, had it's high points and honestly was solid from a thematic and symbolic perspective.
